Missed the November 6 Choices deadline, or moving to LA? Here's what you can still do for 2027–28
- You still have your neighborhood school.
- You can apply late to Choices, LAUSD’s application for magnets, dual language and other special programs; most private K deadlines are still ahead.
- Apply as soon as the application opens on Dec 1, 2026.
Do we still have a public school?
Yes. LAUSD identifies a neighborhood school assignment based on your home address. Families may enroll at that assigned school or apply to specialized programs. (Resident School Identifier)
For Transitional Kindergarten (TK), you can enroll at the assigned school without a Choices application. Choices TK is only available at programs that list it. (Resident School Identifier and 2027–2028 Choices brochure)
Can we still apply to magnets, dual language, or Schools for Advanced Studies?
Yes. The brochure says late Choices applications for 2027–28 are accepted starting Dec 1, 2026. Late applications go to the end of the waitlist; the school contacts you only if a seat opens and your child is next. (2027–2028 Choices brochure)
Official pages conflict on the late application date: the Choices brochure says Dec 1, 2026, while LAUSD’s gifted program (GATE) page says Feb 1, 2027. The brochure says late applications are online only; the GATE page describes a paper option for late Schools for Advanced Studies applications. We have not resolved these conflicts.
What about private schools?
Private schools set admissions deadlines separately from LAUSD. 40 of the 43 verified 2027–28 private K deadlines fall after Nov 6. See private school deadlines for the deadline list.
Moving to LA: what should we check first?
LAUSD identifies the assigned neighborhood school by home address. If you are choosing where to rent or buy, look up the assignment for each address you are considering. (Resident School Identifier)
What should we do now?
- If you missed Nov 6: Apply as soon as the application opens on Dec 1; one LAUSD page lists Feb 1, so do not wait for it.
- If you are moving: look up the assigned school for each address under consideration.
- If private school is an option: check each school's own deadline. See private school deadlines.
