Neighborhood school
The LAUSD school assigned by your home address.
Official source ↗Public options include neighborhood schools and LAUSD Choices programs. Private (independent) coverage includes CAIS member schools only.
Dates reviewed October 2026.
If a specific LAUSD program is a better fit than your neighborhood school, apply through Choices and keep the neighborhood school in view. The on-time application window is October 1 to November 6, 2026, and only online applications will be accepted. Magnet selection uses priority points, racial balance, and available space. An offer is a decision to make later: selected applicants can accept one Choices placement, and no response by the deadline is a final decline.
Next: compare programs for your child's grade and submit online by November 6.
Explore private school if tuition and a separate admissions process fit your family and you want to compare specific schools with public options. Private school dates are school-specific: verified kindergarten application deadlines include November 16, 2026 at The Center for Early Education and January 29, 2027 at Ilan Ramon Day School. Some schools publish March 12 decisions. Check each school's own admissions page for its dates, tuition, assessments, and aid process.
Next: shortlist schools whose tuition and commute work, then check their own calendars.
Choose by the learning experience you want day to day. A magnet centers a theme and selects through priority points, racial balance, and available space. A dual language program teaches grade-level content and literacy through two languages. Schools for Advanced Studies (SAS) are designated sites for exemplary gifted education. These are different program models, not levels in a ranking. Check the specific program description; some SAS applicants also need an eligibility form by November 20, 2026.
Next: compare program descriptions and application requirements in the Choices brochure.
