Schools for Advanced Studies

Schools for Advanced Studies (SAS) is a school designation for exemplary gifted education. LAUSD describes the designation here. A Verification of Eligibility form is required for some applicants, including incoming kindergarteners at a non-District preschool. LAUSD explains who submits it.

Dates reviewed October 2026.

For SAS applicants in Grades 1–12, one of the three criteria on the applicable form must be met: LAUSD gifted identification, qualifying District-approved achievement test results, or all four critical-thinking/problem-solving skills plus ability or strong potential to work two years above grade level.

School year 2027-28

Meet one of criteria A, B, or C on the 2027–28 Grades 1–12 Verification of Eligibility form.

For SAS kindergarten applicants on the school verification form, the student must meet at least ten readiness checklist items and all four critical-thinking/problem-solving skills.

School year 2027-28

At least 10 readiness checklist items and all 4 critical-thinking/problem-solving skills.

For the on-time process, the parent/guardian completes and signs the authorization and gives both pages of the grade-appropriate form to the student's current school; school personnel complete the verification, sign it, and email page 1 to LAUSD.

School year 2027-28

Fillable PDF; parent/guardian signs authorization; school personnel verify and sign; send page 1 only to giftedverification@lausd.net.

A qualified student who resides within an SAS-designated school's attendance boundary does not need a Choices application for that school; the resident school must accommodate the student in its GATE program.

School year 2027-28

No Choices application is required for a qualified resident student at their SAS-designated school.
