How does the order actually work?

Choices is LAUSD’s application for magnet programs. On-time magnet selection considers priority points, racially balanced enrollment, and available space. Late or invalid applications do not receive magnet points. LAUSD application brochure, pp. 17–18.

You may list up to 3 magnet programs. If an applicant is not selected for the first choice, LAUSD considers the second and/or third choice, if listed. Selection for any choice means no waitlist for the others. If not selected for a magnet, the applicant is waitlisted for the first choice only. 2027–28 brochure, p. 17.

A continuing sibling can earn 3 points only when that magnet is your first choice. The siblings must meet the brochure’s Apply account and address requirements. LAUSD’s 2027–2028 brochure, p. 18.

Second and third choices are optional. List a program only if you would accept a placement there. A placement acceptance does not change waitlist status for other programs, but selected applicants may accept only one Choices placement. Declines are final. Official Choices guide, pp. 2, 5.

What should we check before listing a magnet?

Transportation is available at some magnets, and routes and stops for 2027–28 are already set. District-paid transportation may be provided for elementary applicants who live beyond one mile. The maximum one-way bus ride is 90 minutes. Contact the school or Transportation Services to confirm whether a route and stop work for your address. 2027–2028 Choices brochure, p. 17.
