K–6 vs. K–8 vs. K–12 private schools: what changes for your family

  • The main trade-off: a K–12 or K–8 school can spare you a second admissions round, while an elementary-only school gives you a planned point to change schools as your child changes.
  • A K–12 span doesn't by itself promise a place through grade 12; ask whether students move up automatically or are reviewed at each division.
  • In our count of 63 LA private schools that admit kindergartners, 21 are K–5 or K–6 (elementary only), 26 end in grade 8, and 16 end in grade 12.

What does another admissions round involve?

Check each school’s current entry grades and deadlines before applying in fall 2026. An elementary-only family may look for a middle school place around grade 6 or 7. A K–8 family often plans for high school applications around grade 9. The actual entry grades vary by school, and application processes can include school visits, interviews, student assessments, teacher recommendations, records, and family forms. Build a calendar from the specific schools on your list; a general grade-span label cannot tell you which steps each school uses.

A Los Angeles admissions consultant describes grades 6, 7, and 9 as common entry points, with the available grade depending on the student’s current school. The consultant calls ninth grade more challenging and recommends touring multiple schools. Consultant: LA Tutors 123 interview with Sandy Eiges.

The work can be substantial even when an application looks short. Families may coordinate school calendars, tours, student visits, recommendations, records, interviews, and assessments. Ask each admissions office for its current checklist. One Los Angeles forum parent described applying for two children entering grades 7 and 9 and weighing an optional test. How do the grade spans compare?

Published grade spans describe the grades a school offers; they do not answer how many new places open in a given year or what happens to current students at a transition. As one example of published entry information, New Roads School says it typically enrolls new students in kindergarten, grades 6 and 7, and grade 9. That tells applicants where the school anticipates new enrollment; it does not establish a general continuation policy for current students. School: New Roads admissions FAQ.

For any K–12 school, ask directly whether students advance automatically, must meet stated academic or conduct requirements, or complete a separate division review. Ask whether the answer differs between middle and upper school. If an official policy page answers the question, save that page and its date; if not, ask admissions to explain the practice in writing. Do not assume that a school’s K–12 label means a student never has to re-qualify.

What does continuity feel like?

A long grade span gives classmates, teachers, and families more years to know one another. Families sometimes call a student who stays from kindergarten through graduation a “lifer.” If the term comes up on a tour, ask how many students join at each grade and what the school does to help new students connect with established groups.

A shorter span offers a planned point to reconsider. Your child’s interests, learning needs, friendships, or commute tolerance may look different in five or six years. A transition can also bring a fresh peer group and a school better suited to the next stage. It asks families to spend time on another search and application cycle, and the outcome is not known in advance.

How should you think about tuition over time?

Compare the years you expect to attend, not only the first year’s tuition. Tuition, fees, transportation, after-school care, and financial aid vary over time. A K–12 path includes more annual tuition bills at one school; a shorter span brings a later search and another school’s charges. Today’s grade-span label cannot tell you the total.

Tuition rises most years; Bloomberg reported a 3.6% average rise at U.S. day schools in 2026, so ask how each school sets increases and renews aid. Journalism: Bloomberg on private-school tuition.

Ask whether financial aid is reviewed annually, whether returning students reapply for aid, and which costs sit outside tuition. Compare a realistic range for the years ahead rather than multiplying this year’s bill by the full grade span. For a shorter-span school, include the possibility that the later school costs more or less and that financial aid could differ. For a K–12 school, include the chance that a family’s needs or finances change before high school.
